× Mapping References, Workshops Tour
Since 2014, Ernst organizes a nomadic workshop tour titled “Mapping References” every year in a different country in order to bring together graphic designer, students and teacher who address different themes such as cultural identity, traditions through the graphic design spectre. The purpose of this project is to share knowledge, ideas, practices and approaches of the discipline in order to build intercultural understanding, enhance its own graphic traditions and specially to strengthen cultural diversity.
We initiated the first workshop during the Graphic design Biennale in Brno in September 2014 with a group of students from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (see below).
The format of the workshop will be offered in a number of schools and colleges of applied arts. The results will then be valued in a touring exhibition.
× Workshop #2: LEBANON
The forthcoming had to take place in Holy Spirit University of Kaslik. (Workshop canceled).
× Workshop #1: CZECH REPUBLIC
Brno, 26th International Biennal of Graphic Design
19th September, 2014.
www.27.bienalebrno.org
We initiated the first Workshop with a group of students from The Hague Royal Academy of Art with the following issue: Designers consciously or unconsciously base their work on references. These can be historic (archives) or contemporary (environment), and can come from varied fields such as music, cinema, literature etc.) What are these references? How do we (designers) translate them into our work? What kind of references do we use in our practice? How do we use and map our references? The aim of the workshop is to identify, understand, explain, link and “map” our references. Based on a guideline (some interesting starting points), every participant will think, list, research everything that he usually uses as
references in his work, creating a large map of images, texts, ideas.
× Western swiss graphic design*
The body of knowledge about graphic design produced in French or italian speaking Switzerland is reduced compared to the German Swiss one. Indeed, the published literature has heavily focused on the latter since it was in that part of the country that schools, institutions, magazines and creations that have marked history were developed. Consequently, this model of design history has contributed to overlook people and artefacts made in other regions of Switzerland.
*funded by the Design and visual arts network of competences (RCDAV) of the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (HES SO), held at Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD – Genève), by a research team composed of Jérôme Baratelli (project leader), Constance Delamadeleine (research assistant), Ann Griffin, Stéphane Hernandez, Gregor Schönborn, and Niels Wehrspann (graphic designers).
